Getting a work permit for the UK is reasonably straightforward providing that a number of tests are met. Employers are keen to recruit from the largest possible pool of talent and government policy is geared towards this aim. However, there are a number of requirements to be fulfilled before a UK work permit will be granted.

Non-EU or EEA (European Economic Area) nationals will require a work permit to come to the UK for employment. In order for a UK work permit to be granted, an application must be made by a specific person for a specific post. It is not possible for an employer to secure a work permit before a candidate for the position has been selected, or for someone to get a work permit unless they have been offered employment. If you want to work in the UK but have not been offered a specific post, you may qualify under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme.

When applying for a work permit for a named individual, an employer must demonstrate that they have been unable to find a suitable candidate from the EU or EEA. It must further be demonstrated that you have suitable qualifications and experience for the job – this will often (though not always) mean a degree level qualification or the equivalent. Having been issued, work permits may be valid for up to 60 months, although they can be extended as necessary.

The application fee for a UK work permit is currently £153 and this must be paid before the application will be processed. For more information and general advice please contact us using our online enquiry form below or via the telephone number provided.
