If an application for political asylum, or other application for immigrant status in the UK, is refused, the person concerned will normally have the automatic right to appeal against the decision. When this happens, the letter informing you of the decision will contain forms and guidance on how to appeal against the decision. This appeal will be heard before a body called the AIT.

The AIT, which stands for Asylum and Immigration Tribunal, is the government body that hears appeals against decisions made by the British Home Office in UK immigration cases. These cases are normally heard before one or more immigration judges, sometimes accompanied by non-legal tribunal members.

When appearing before the AIT, the applicant is entitled to bring a representative with him or her. Representation at the AIT is important: whoever represents you at the tribunal should be experienced in immigration and asylum matters. This is your chance to have a negative decision overturned and for your voice to be heard, so make sure that you find someone who knows what they are doing.

There are many law firms and legal services that cater to people in this situation, whether it concerns leave to remain, partners and spouses, student visas, or work permits.
